I am writing a paper for my english class on childhood obesity. I was just wondering if there was anyone out there who has been through this personally and could give me some good advice for my paper.

There are lots of good ideas out there. Plenty of people chime in on the issue with regularity.

One thing I’ve noticed during my lifetime, and I’m 45, is that when I was a kid, most mothers didn’t work. Therefore, at the end of the day, they were thinking about, and preparing, a real dinner. Now, it seems, no family can do without two paychecks, it’s still mom’s "job" to figure out dinner no matter how exhausted she may be, and there’s a fast food joint on almost every corner.

I’m not placing blame for the obesity on mothers going to work…far from it. I’m thinking, though, that if there were healthier solutions for overworked parents, they would choose them.

Brilliant idea! Someone needs to start a fast-food joint that tastes good and costs the same as all the other ones.

no I’ve never been through it but eating right, getting enough excersices, keeps you in shape! doing a sport or just playing out side, climbing a tree, playing tag, or a made up game, and going in the sunlight can give you a vitimen that i can’t think of.

The best solution is prevention. This includes chiefly fostering an active lifestyle and promoting an appropriate and healthy diet at home and at school. You may already have been impacted by school wellness programs instituting assignments like yours and healthier choices at the lunch counter.

Unfortunately, things have changed in the past decades. Neighborhoods are not always safe. Traffic has increased dramatically, so many kids play inside with video games or just watch TV rather than run or bike outside. Many moms work and don’t always have time or energy to prepare good meals. Convenience foods have a high fat content. Fat is also a flavor enhancer. Even nutritionists agree that low fat foods don’t usually taste as good as those with a higher fat content. You should also research high fructose corn syrup and its effects on satiety.

Back to lifestyle: the majority of us are simply more sedentary than those of earlier generations. We watch golf, bowling, pool and poker on TV! How bad is that? We hop in the car for the shortest of trips. We eat more, the portions are greater, the food is higher in fat, and we burn off those calories at a lower rate. It’s a REAL problem.

    Good luck with your paper.

Edit: BTW, I personally am skeptical about the hereditary component, but some researchers findings are hard to refute. It is true that you have a much greater chance of being fat in adulthood if you are a fat child, and also if one or both parents are overweight.

I guess living in a world with more parents working and fast food is cheaper than buying healthy options people in low socioeconmic status is a big factor it limtis peoples choices in what they can afford or what they think is healthy. Its all about getting back to basics and educating this people, better food more excercise not more food no excersice
